Hi new to this site. My Brother was diagnosed in March with carcinoid syndrome. Ex-lap in April <tumors in diffifcult spots < biopsied sent to Penn . Saw Dr. Fraker who referred to Dr. Soulen in Interventional radiology . Mets to Liver 70%. Chemoembolization Right side in May. Left side in June. Great succes of Liver but now repeat CT shows increased Mesenteric nodules and questionable increase of ascites. My Brother cannot be sure of status of fluid. Saw DR.Fraker (U of Penn)7/31. He is not sure if these nodules make him a canidate for tumor debulking. Plan is for Laparoscopy on 8/26 first he will sample ascites to rule out carcinosis. If we are ok he will proceed with exploratory laparotomy to find primary.
As an RN having worked in a Recovery room I had a hard time when a patient was awakening from surgery and the surgery they were hoping for wasn't done. My brother understands that and it makes these next couple of weeks really hard. We had a good talk yesterday after the appointment and we know that postive thinking can make a positive outcome.
My brother and I are what you would call Irish twins. We have done everything together and are thinking is so much alike that our inlaws get sick of us. He is the father of 3 succesful builder even in a recession his company cannot keep up with the work demand. He works everyday. Even on days of his surgeries he would go tpo work first then come to the hospital. His work keeps his mind healthy but it's the quiet time that takes him out.
My Mom is a breast cancer survivor. 70 years young , 10 yrs ago 13 nodes + right breast. Now with Mets to spine, liver , chest wall and perineum. Chemo q Friday at U of Penn. At present time with her CA works every day looks great. She does inspire my brother to do the same but it's very hard on her.
If anyone has a similiar situation or having treatment in the Philly area please contact us. My sister-in-law in particular is who I worry about she has alot on her plate and I think it would be great for her to talk to people in similiar situation. Look forward to any info.
Thanks Susie J.
